Understanding the Efficiency of a MERV 8 Filter

MERV ratings are a way to measure the efficiency of air filters in trapping common air pollutants within specific size ranges. The MERV table covers 20 levels, which can be grouped together to give an idea of what a given range of levels can capture and the effectiveness of each. A MERV 8 filter is a medium efficiency filter that can remove most particles, but it will need to be changed periodically to maintain its performance. The minimum efficiency report value (MERV) indicates the efficiency of an air filter at its lowest performance level.

A MERV score of 1 to 6 is the lowest range, but that doesn't necessarily mean you should rule out a filter with a rating within this range. Filters with a MERV rating of 8 to 13 are usually high-end filters for domestic use or high-quality commercial filters. MERV 1 to 4 are effective for controlling larger particles, while MERV 5 to 8 are effective for controlling mold spores, hairspray and dust. MERV 8 filters are 90 percent efficient on particles from 3 to 10 micrometers in size.

A MERV 9 traps less than 50% of particles with a size between 1 and 3.0 microns, the MERV 10 stops up to 64%, the MERV 11 captures up to 79% and the MERV 12 is capable of trapping up to 89%. Filters with a MERV value of 13 to 16 are the most restrictive and can trap the smallest particles, such as bacteria, tobacco smoke, and burned wood. According to the National Air Filtration Association, there are 16 MERV values, from 1 to 16, and the efficiency of the tested filter increases as the MERV number increases. In general, filters with a MERV 16 rating or lower are considered suitable filters for air conditioning systems for residential, commercial, and general hospital use. A product superior to that of the MERV 11 is designed for commercial homes or homes with family members who suffer from respiratory problems. When it comes to MERV 8 filters, they are considered medium-efficiency filters that can capture most particles in the air.

They are ideal for homes or businesses that need an efficient filter but don't require one that is too restrictive. They are also great for those who suffer from allergies or asthma since they can help reduce airborne allergens and irritants. It's important to note that while MERV 8 filters are effective at trapping particles, they will need to be changed periodically in order to maintain their performance. This means that you should check your filter regularly and replace it when necessary in order to ensure that your air quality remains high.
